The winner of the first game of the finals, Order of Operations, is Phoenix.
We will now reveal the second game is…
In Hive, you must attempt to capture your opponent’s queen bee while preventing your own Queen from being captured.
In Hive, both players will have 11 hexagonal pieces: 3 grasshoppers, 3 ants, 2 beetles, 2 spiders, and 1 queen bee (pictured below from left to right).
Play begins with one player placing a piece on the gameboard, following with the second player placing a piece adjacent to the first piece edge-to-edge with the first. After this, players will take turns interacting with pieces on the board. There will be a 4-minute time limit for your turn.
There are two actions you may take during your turn: The first is to add a piece to the board. When you place a new piece onto the board, it must be touching the edge of only your own pieces – it cannot touch your opponents’ pieces even if it is also touching your own. Your Queen Bee must be placed within the first 4 turns of the game, all other pieces can be added at any point throughout the game. You do not have to place all of your pieces on the board, however, once a piece has been placed on the board, it cannot be removed.
The second action is to move one of your pieces already on the board. You cannot move pre-existing pieces if your queen bee has not yet been placed on the board. Each of the five different types of tiles has a different pattern of movement and will be discussed as follows:
The Queen Bee can move one space in any direction into any unoccupied space.
The Beetle can also move one space in any direction, but it can move onto occupied spaces as well as unoccupied ones. If a beetle moves onto an occupied space, it will cover the piece that previously occupied that space. A covered piece cannot move. There is no limit to the number of pieces that can be stacked upon one another.
The Grasshopper can jump any number of pieces in a straight line to the next unoccupied space. A grasshopper cannot jump over an unoccupied space.
The Spider can move 3 spaces during its turn through unoccupied spaces it shares direct contact with. The spider cannot backtrack on itself or move less than 3 spaces
The Ant can move from its position to any other position around the board.
However, there are a few movement restrictions that all pieces must abide by. All pieces must be interlinked with each other – you cannot make a move that would separate the hive into multiple fragments (this includes moves that un-link and re-link the hive.) The Ant, Spider, and Queen Bee cannot be moved in a non-sliding motion; that is, if a piece is surrounded to the extent where it cannot slide into or out of a position, it cannot be moved that way. This does not apply to pieces being placed onto the board, provided all other conditions are met. If you cannot conduct a valid move or add a piece to the board, you will skip your turn until you are able to do so or the game is over.
The game will end when one player’s Queen Bee is completely surrounded by pieces of any colour; the player whose Queen Bee was surrounded will be declared the loser and the other player will be declared the winner of Hive.
I will now reveal the items available during this game.
The first item is the Queen Bee Extension. With this item, you will be allowed to extend the number of turns you have to place your Queen Bee by 2 turns.
The second item is the Tile Swap. This item will allow you to, instead of taking your turn normally, allow you to swap any two of your tiles, provided all other rules permit them to move.
The last item is the Tile Transform. This item will take any tile in your reserve besides the Queen Bee and transform it into any other tile except the Queen Bee.
The Queen Bee Extension item was assigned to Devin, who gave it to Phoenix.
The Tile Swap item was assigned to Gevonte, who gave it to Nathaniel.
The Tile Transform item was assigned to Pory, who gave it to Nathaniel.
As this is a live match, it is up to the two of you to negotiate a time for this game to occur. Phoenix, you still have your Item Negator; Nathaniel, you still have your Item Duplicator.
With that, begin the match!
